What if ninety-eight times ninety-seven took four small moves — with no long multiplication?

Before we calculate, read the shape of the answer. It will have four digits, arranged as two blocks: two digits on the left, and two digits on the right.

Use one hundred as the base — then measure how far each number falls below it.

Ninety-eight is two below one hundred. Ninety-seven is three below. Those small gaps are the deficits.

For the left block, cross-subtract: ninety-eight minus three is ninety-five. Or ninety-seven minus two — the same answer.

For the right block, multiply the deficits: two times three is six. One small detail now decides the answer.

The base is one hundred. Its right-hand block needs two places. What should go there? Write zero-six, not just six.

Now join the blocks: ninety-five and zero-six make nine thousand five hundred six. That is ninety-eight times ninety-seven.

Keep the rhythm: find deficits — cross-subtract — multiply — protect the two-digit block. Next, try ninety-six times ninety-eight yourself.
